The Menopause - Lets Breathe – Places available
February 9th @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm GMT
Venue; Sunnyside House, Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicestershire, LE60HH
PRICE: Full: £85.00
Run by Gaynor Quilter and Dr Linda Khalid

This workshop explores our relationship to the menopause. It can be a great time of transition physically, emotionally and spiritually  For many women it can be a struggle. The  workshop aims to provide support at this time. We will introduce the use of Mindfulness practices to BE with it, rather than battling against it..

Mindfulness for the Menopause

This is not a one size fits all approach to the menopause. We will all have individual responses. The workshop will give you opportunity to spend a day with others sharing your menopause journey and gaining new tools to support you as life continues to change  We cannot stop the change but we can change our relationship with it.
Equally if you wish not to share but just to listen, that is fine too.
The Workshop will be guided by the experiences arising in the room. Thus focusing on the needs of those attending.

The topics explored may include:-
Physical responses: poor sleep; hot flushes, lack of energy, loss of libido, loss of our youthful body.
Emotional responses: changing relationship with our physical body, partners, parents, children.
Behavioural responses: eating; drinking, technology, health seeking behaviour.
Pharmacological responses: HRT, herbal remedies
Spiritual responses: who am I?, loss of roles, deeper values.

Gaynor and Linda will share with you what has kept them well during the menopause. There will be times for discussion along with experiencing mindfulness meditation practices to aid wellness.

Mindfulness is recognized by The  Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists as reducing stress responses during the menopause and thus reducing symptoms.

The practices will include
Being at home in the body
Acceptance practice
Sleep practice
Kindness/compassion practice

Dr Linda Khalid's journey:
An early menopause took her by surprise a year after the birth of her daughter. That year was spent having a lot of lie downs! And also experiencing palpitations. Once realised she quickly gave in to HRT. Physically things improved. However this was also a time of deep questioning and the beginning of a spiritual journey which would connect her with mindfulness.

Gaynor Quilter:
Gaynor stopped working full time having not slept for over 3 years due to night sweats and feeling that she could no longer function in a responsible way. On the basis of remembered advice from her Mum before her death and a history of grandmother and aunts dying of breast cancer, she avoided HRT, but tried every complimentary and herbal option know to her friends or researched. Spending a small fortune in the quest!  She practices all the meditations she will be sharing and can say she now has a good nights sleep.

Changing the experience of pain.
Dr Liz Sparkes has a PhD in pain psychology and has trained to teach mindfulness with Suryacitta.

Researchers studying neuroscience have shown that just a weeks worth of sitting with awareness of pain and engaging with meditation (following the breath), changes the brains response to pain. Being curious about the sensations themselves rather than getting caught up in thought about the impact of pain can make a difference. The flurry of activity in areas in the brain associated with relaying the sensory experience reduces while activity in areas that moderate pain increases.

Liz will take you through ways to change your pain using mindfulness and meditation techniques.

Techniques include:
Visualisations, mindfulness of body and breath and exploring emotional release in the body.
Please bring a packed lunch

TESTIMONIALS

Suryacitta
“When a colleague of mine arranged a small group mindfulness meditation sessions with Suryacitta, I had no idea what to expect. As a medical professional, however, I was quite curious about what could be on offer to help with everyday life stressors. This continued weekly for further 6-8weeks and provided another perspective on my approach to life and other people around me. Each session lasted around 1 hour facilitated by himself who was open, non-judgemental and knowledgeable. He had written a book on the subject, which I found extremely honest and easy to read and follow. The sessions were unbelievably simple and practical consisting of discussion among the group and mental and physical practices.”
Dr Reza Kiani, Consultant in learning disabilities

“Suryacitta introduced us to how the practice of mindfulness leads to a quiet cumulative experience of inner peace, resilience and the first steps to finding the happiness we have buried within ourselves. Finding and living in happiness is a continuous life-long exercise, and only an effective and advanced teacher can instill the faith needed to sustain and enjoy the journey. Suryacitta was that teacher, and I am grateful for the experience. I would recommend Suryacitta’s course and book to anyone who has genuinely realised there is an immediate and important need for compassion and happiness to pervade their lives. May you be kind, and may you be happy.”
Dr Avinash Hiremath, Psychiatrist Glenfield, Leicester

Dr Adam
“One of the main reasons I had for coming on the course was that I had struggled to learn from just reading books on the subject. Dr Adam’s careful, sympathetic and warm approach to introducing us to mindfulness has made all the difference for me. I look forward to continuing to practice daily.”
Tony, NHS patient

Dr Adam
To be quite frank I have found these sessions with Dr Adam superb. The sessions are well thought through, relaxing and delivered in a positive manner. The combination of meditation and poetry has opened my mind to alternatives. I do find it helpful to meditate frequently and when I am having a “bad time” and cannot calm down quickly. The length of the course is appropriate to get tot he heart of the issue. A follow up session would be useful. I can’t think of any negatives as I have found this course very useful.
